Translating research findings into policy and practice is a priority for NYU Silver scholars. As 2024-25 NYU Public Voices Fellows, Assistant Professors Tina Kilaberia, Ifrah Magan, Dale Dagar Maglalang and Kiara L. Moore will learn to increase their influence as thought leaders whose ideas shape the public discourse. They are among 22 faculty from across the University selected for the fellowship program, a collaboration between The OpEd Project and NYU’s Office of the Provost and Office of Global Inclusion, Diversity, and Strategic Innovation.
The Public Voices Fellowship provides training and support to thought leaders from diverse groups whose voices are underrepresented in the media and other public forums. Fellows will learn from media insiders and work with experienced coaches both to write effective op-eds and to get them published.
For Drs. Kilaberia, Magan, Maglaglang and Moore, the fellowship is also an opportunity to showcase the important work that they, as social work scholars, are doing to address justice and equity. Dr. Kiliberia’s research is focused on older adults, with current projects exploring social isolation and elder mistreatment. Dr. Magan's current work examines the health and mental health equity outcomes of Black, Muslim and forcibly-displaced populations. Dr. Maglalang’s research examines how racism and other forms of oppression influence Black, Indigenous and People of Color and sexual gender minority populations and their use of substances. Dr. Moore studies strategies to enhance mental health services for youth of color, youth from lower socioeconomic backgrounds, and LGBTQ+ youth during their transition to adulthood.
