Research relating to HIV prevention and child poverty will garner NYU Silver scholars the social work research field’s highest honors. The Society for Social Work and Research (SSWR) has announced that it will present the 2024 Excellence in Research Award to Professor and Associate Dean for Research Marya Gwadz and the Excellence in Research Award Honorable Mention to Professor Wen-Jui Han. SSWR’s Excellence in Research award honors rigorous, peer-reviewed scholarship that directly informs practice and policy to improve lives and advance social justice.
“We are so proud at NYU Silver that SSWR is celebrating the scholarship of Dr. Marya Gwadz and Dr. Wen-Jui Han as exemplars in social work research,” said Dr. Michael Lindsey, Dean and Paulette Goddard Professor of Social Work at the School. “These well-deserved recognitions are the latest examples of the many ways in which research excellence thrives at NYU Silver.”
Dr. Gwadz is being honored for her lead authorship of the article “Advancing behavioral interventions for African American/Black and Latino persons living with HIV using a new conceptual model that integrates critical race theory, harm reduction, and self-determination theory: a qualitative exploratory study,” which was published in the International Journal for Equity in Health. PhD candidate Sabrina Cluesman, PhD student Khadija Israel, and Constance and Martin Silver Center on Data Science and Social Equity Director of Center Operations Amanda Ritchie are among Dr. Gwadz’ co-authors.
Dr. Han received Honorable Mention for “Precarious Parental Employment Conditions and Family Poverty Experiences in the First Six Years of a Child’s Life,” which was published in the Journal of Child and Family Studies and co-authored by Liwei Zhang, PhD ’19, Research Assistant Professor at the Brown School at Washington University in St. Louis and. Dr. Han previously received the Excellence in Research Award in 2004 and 2014.
Drs. Gwadz and Han will receive their honors on Saturday, January 13, 2024 at SSWR’s 28th Annual Conference in Washington, DC.
