FAQs
Graduate students are billed each semester based on the number of credits in which they are enrolled. For the 2024-2025 academic year, the cost per credit is $1,652, with a non-returnable registration and services fee per credit. The fee for the first credit is $560 and the fee for all credits after the first is $77 per credit.
Wait-listed courses will not be counted until the student is officially enrolled in the course.
Silver School students are automatically enrolled in the Comprehensive Plan for health insurance. Students may switch between plans, waive the plan entirely (must show proof of other acceptable health insurance), or select the NYUHC Only Plan. For details about NYU student health insurance, dental insurance, rates for family or dependent coverage, and options to waive out of NYU insurance, please visit NYU Student Health Insurance.
These are typically the only charges billed directly by NYU. For a listing of indirect costs, such as living expenses, please review the Office of Financial Aid Cost of Attendance website.
Like the Two-Year pathway at Washington Square, tuition is charged per credit for the MSW Program at Shanghai and New York. Tuition rates per credit are the same in both programs. However, students have traditionally found the cost of living in Shanghai to be significantly lower than in New York City, and in recent years, the average merit-based tuition scholarship received by eligible students has been approximately $10,500 per year.
Students who wish to change their automatic insurance enrollment must complete the online selection/waiver process via the Student Health Insurance website. Eligible students can waive NYU-sponsored insurance entirely via the waiver website.
US citizens and eligible non-citizens can complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) each academic year they are enrolled in the program.
All students can indicate on their application to Silver if they wish to be considered for institutional merit scholarships. Students can also apply for School-Based Named Scholarships when the application becomes available.
NYU is a private institution and there is no difference in the cost of tuition for New York State residents and non–New York State residents.
International students can be considered for institutional financial aid. If you indicate in your application that you would like to be considered for scholarship, your application will be reviewed for scholarship eligibility and you will be notified in your acceptance letter if you are awarded one. International students can also apply for School-Based Named Scholarships when the application is available. If additional funding is required, you can consider obtaining private or corporate loans. Note that international students are ineligible for US federal financial aid.
Students who complete the FAFSA may be eligible for Work-Study. Work-Study is an opportunity for students to earn wages through on-campus part-time employment, up to the maximum amount of Work-Study allotted in their individual financial aid award package. Work-Study students receive a paycheck that goes directly to the student with the expectation that the money will be used for necessary school expenses, including but not limited to books, transportation, and other fees. Earnings from WorkStudy can not be applied towards tuition charges. Students deemed eligible for Work-Study are not guaranteed a job on campus. In order to secure Work-Study funding, students must apply for a Work-Study position through the Wasserman Center for Career Development, then they must be interviewed and hired by a department.
Work-Study money cannot be applied towards the required field internship hours.
There are no Work-Study positions available at the Rockland, Westchester, or Shanghai campuses.
Graduate assistantships are offered to a limited number of PhD students at the Silver School. MSW students are not offered GA positions at the Silver School. Instead, MSW students can use the Wasserman Center’s career development platform, Handshake, to look for GA positions available to the NYU community.
If you were awarded an NYU Silver Scholarship, these funds are usually renewed in the second year of your studies as long as you maintain “Good Standing” in the MSW Program as described in the MSW Student Manual. For a full description of the terms of your scholarship, please review the Guidelines for Tuition Scholarship document that may be found on the MSW Student Resources page.
School-Based Named Scholarships are granted for one year. Students can re-apply for another School-Based Named Scholarship for the following academic year.
If you are not awarded a School-Based Named Scholarship in your first year, you can apply again the following year.
Students eligible for NYU tuition remission are ineligible for any Silver Scholarship. You should check with your HR department about how much tuition remission you will receive.
If you are unable to take out additional federal loans, you may still qualify for a private loan. NYU does not endorse any private lenders, as they are not bound by the same restrictions as federal loans; thus, students must decide if private loans are the right option for them. Information regarding loans may be found on the NYU Office of Financial Aid website.
