Info for Practicum & Community Partners
Why Field Learning Is Now Practicum Education
NYU Silver has updated the name of our Department of Field Learning & Community Partnerships to the Department of Practicum Education & Community Partnerships. The replacement of the term “field” with “practicum” in the context of experiential learning has also affected the titles of Silver courses, positions, and all related items. Learn why we made this change and how it will be applied.
Resources for Practicum Instructors
Seminar in Field Instruction (SIFI)
NOTE: Although NYU Silver has replaced the adjective “Field” with “Practicum,” in light of the former term’s association with slavery and the exploitation of immigrant laborers, the terminology “Seminar in Field Instruction” (SIFI) will remain the same, while the consortium of NY-area schools of social work determines whether/how to change the name of this course.
The Seminar in Field Instruction (SIFI) provides mandatory training for new Practicum instructors and enables them to effectively meet the educational, administrative, supportive, responsibilities of this new role.
Become a Practicum Education Site
The Silver School welcomes agencies to apply for consideration as practicum education sites. In order to qualify as a placement site, agencies must have a social work student program with standards and philosophy acceptable to the School, the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE), and the professional community. Agencies must be committed to training social work students and willing to meet School requirements outlined in the MSW Student Manual.
